Currently resident scenic and lighting designer for the Know Theatre of Cincinnati, Andrew Hungerford is fascinated by the creation of theatrical magic in small, intimate performance spaces. As a freelance designer, he also loves the challenge of generating immediacy for an audience within larger venues.
Andrew's writing and performance experience round out an approach to theatrical design that aims to serve the theatrical experience as a
whole. If the lighting isn't helping the story be told, for example, he feels that he isn't doing his job.
Andrew's background is somewhat diverse. He graduated from Michigan State University in 2002 with a B.A. in Theatre and a B.S. in Astrophysics. He received his MFA in Lighting Design from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 2005.
A photo is included on this page as a head shot of sorts. It is also to assure you that his portfolio's url, "lighting.ofdoom," does not mean that Andrew is evil. Look at the photo. That is not an evil man.
In the summer of 2005 Andrew directed his play Between the
Water and the Air at the
Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It received a second production at the 2006 Cincinnati Fringe.
Andrew was the 2006 recipient of the USITT Lighting Design Award sponsored by Barbizon. His lighting design for the opera Ariodante, along with the scenic design by Paul Shortt, was included in the 2007 US entry to the Prague Quadrennial.
Along with his resident postion at Know Theatre, Andrew is the lighting designer for The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati and Ballet Theatre Midwest. His freelance work has been seen at theatres including: Livermore Valley Opera (Livermore, CA); Stanford Summer Theatre (Palo Alto, CA); The Performance Network (Ann Arbor, MI); The Boarshead Theatre (Lansing, MI); The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (Madison, NJ); Jersey Productions (Covington, KY); and The Opera Theatre and Music Festical of Lucca (Italy).
